The invitations are rolling in. Office holiday parties, festive dinners with friends, cocktail evenings, family gatherings, and of course, New Year's Eve!
It's the most wonderful time of the year. But for many women, it's also the time when getting dressed suddenly becomes a little overwhelming.
You open your closet, stare at all those clothes, and think:
"I have absolutely NOTHING to wear!"
Sound familiar?
As a European Style Coach, I see this all the time. Even those women with beautiful wardrobes filled with fabulous pieces struggle to put together outfits that make them feel confident, polished, and excited to walk into a room.
And here's something I want you to remember:
Your holiday outfit is making an impression as well. Is it the one YOU want to make?
Before you rush out to buy yet another holiday dress, let's talk about three common mistakes that might be stealing your sparkle this season.
Mistake #1: Buying a New Outfit for Every Single Holiday Event
I totally get it - shopping is fun! You receive an invitation, immediately start thinking about what to wear, and before you know it, you're scrolling through your favorite online stores. You ig
Office party? New dress.
Cocktails with girlfriends? Another outfit.
Holiday dinner? Something completely different.
And suddenly you've spent a small fortune on pieces you might only wear once.
Now, don't get me wrong - I LOVE shopping and would never tell you to not treat yourself to something fabulous. But here's what I try to encourage my clients to do first:
Shop your own closet before you shop the stores.
That gorgeous silk blouse you usually wear with tailored trousers? Try it with a fabulous sequin skirt. Your favorite black pants? Pair them with a metallic top, statement earrings, and beautiful heels.
Your classic blazer? Add a festive brooch, a statement belt or a beautiful silk scarf. Sometimes the most stunning outfits are combinations you've simply never thought of before. My favorite sentence during closet sessions with my clients - “Love it - I would have never thought to put this together!”
And if you're missing a piece to complete your look? THEN go shopping, but this time with intention!
Mistake #2: Saving Your Fabulous Pieces for a "Special Occasion"
Ladies, we need to talk about this one! How many beautiful pieces are hanging in your closet, patiently waiting for their big moment?
The sequin jacket you fell in love with, the fabulous heels you just HAD to have. That gorgeous dress you bought because it made you feel like a million dollars. But somehow, they never make it out of your closet.
Why do you think that? Because you're saving them for a special occasion.
But guess what?
THE SPECIAL OCCASION HAS ARRIVED!
And here's another little secret: You don't always need a glamorous event to wear something glamorous. One of my favorite styling tricks is mixing dressy pieces with everyday wardrobe staples.
Try your sequin blazer with dark-wash jeans, a t-shirt and heels, wear that luxurious satin skirt with a beautiful knit sweater, or pair a statement blouse with a vegan leather pants or skirt.
This creates that effortlessly chic European look that makes you stand out. Fashion is meant to be enjoyed, not admired on a hanger. And if a piece makes you feel fabulous, why wouldn't you want to wear it?
Mistake #3: Forgetting the Power of Accessories
Never, ever underestimate what the right accessories can do for an outfit. Seriously!
You can wear the simplest black dress and transform it into several completely different holiday looks just by changing your accessories.
Imagine this:
Look 1: The Office Holiday Party
Your favorite dress (I purposefully don’t say black dress as black is not flattering on everyone), elegant gold, silver or rose-gold earrings, a structured blazer, and classic heels.
Sophisticated. Polished. Powerful.
Look 2: Cocktails With Friends
The SAME dress, but this time with fabulous statement earrings, metallic heels, and a sparkly clutch.
Fun. Festive. A little dramatic.
Look 3: New Year's Eve
Yes, still the same dress!
Add a bold necklace, a faux-fur jacket, glamorous heels, and perhaps a red lip.
Three occasions. One dress. Three completely different impressions.
Accessories are not an afterthought. They are often the finishing touch that makes an outfit feel intentional, personal, and absolutely fabulous.
The Secret to a Fabulous Holiday Wardrobe
Here's what I really want you to take away from this:
You don't necessarily need MORE clothes. You need to see MORE possibilities in the clothes you already own.
Knowing how to combine colors, textures, silhouettes, and accessories can completely change the way you look at your wardrobe.
And this is especially important when you want to make the right impression.
Whether you're attending a corporate holiday party, celebrating with friends, or enjoying a special dinner, your outfit should reflect who you are and how you want to show up.
Confident, stylish, and comfortable in your own skin.
And yes, with a little sparkle!
